New Jersey Proposes to Ban Mercury Batteries

New Jersey of USA proposes a bill to prohibit the sale of mercury batteries and consumer products that use mercury batteries. The bill would also prohibit the disposal of used mercury batteries as solid waste. According to the bill, mercury batteries” mean any button, coin, cylindrical, rectangular or other shaped dry cell batteries consisting of mercury which are designed or sold for commercial, industrial, medical or institutional use. Here’s the highlight of the proposal:

On or after January 1, 2011
1. Any mercury battery or any product for consumer use that operates with a mercury battery will be prohibited;

2. No person shall knowingly dispose of used mercury battery as solid waste at any time. The bill establishes alternative procedures for any person seeking to dispose of used mercury battery in other manners
